The concept of webcam isn’t a new one. In fact webcams were first introduced to the XXX industry back in 1995 when porn film producers would livestream behind the scenes action. Aside from the big adult movie companies, the first individual to jump on the cam-wagon was an American college student and conceptual artist named Jenny Ringley.
Jenny was one of the first women to really monetise camming and it came about after she created a website called “JenniCam”. This involved Jenny having cameras set up in different spots around her dorm room. The webcam would capture snaps of Jenny every few minutes resulting in a sort of clip show of hundreds of images. The camera captured Jenny doing anything a teen 18+ girl did in her bedroom – brushing her teeth, doing her laundry and doing stripteases. Jenny would then broadcast the images on the Internet, which was still fairly new at the time.
In 1998, Jenny had divided her website’s access into free and paying so viewers could choose which option they wanted. Obviously the topless and nude content would involve pay payment whilst the more tame pics would be free. 1998 seemed to be a pivotal year with regards to the cam industry, still in its infancy. A commercial site called “AmandaCam” came onto the scene which was a like-for-like of the “Jennicam” business model.
However Amanda made a very important early discovery that would influence the camming industry forever. She discovered that a website’s popularity could be vastly increased by enabling viewers to chat with the cam model online. Amanda then made it possible within the members section of her own site, for viewers to directly chat to her. Amanda made a point to chat with her viewers for over three hours a day, resulting in fan loyalty and an added income.
Since the early days of live webcasts by Jenny and Amanda, the phenomenon of webcamming has continued to grow. It is now a multibillion-pound industry which boasts an average of at least 12,500 cam models online at any given time and more than 240,000 viewers at any given time. Once viewed as a small fraction of the XXX industry, by 2016 camming had became “the engine of the porn industry”, according to XBIZ’s publisher, Alec Helmy.
