Surprising Facts About Orgasms

Orgasms have always been a popular topic – just look at Meg Ryan wailing like an orgasmic banshee in ‘When Harry Met Sally’. Emma Thompson was recently hailed for her latest movie, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, which examines the “pleasure gap”.  According to sex expert Rowan Pelling, women in their 50s and 60s are hiring therapists for one-on-one sessions in order to permanently close the “pleasure gap,” which refers to the deficit in the number of orgasms women experience compared to their male partners.

According to a University of Ottawa study, moaning should be completely removed from the Orgasm Rating Scale because it is a subpar predictor of female sexual pleasure. Sex expert Tracey Cox noted earlier last year that some people experience orgasm completely by accident when they’re not trying to be sexual, such as when they’re exercising. Wow. That would be a real perk the next time I go for a long boring walk on the treadmill.

Did you know that your ability to orgasm was greatly influenced by your parents (I know! Gross right?) A 2005 study on adult twins found that between a third and 60% of your capacity for climax may be determined by your DNA. According to research, orgasms are hereditary so if your mother doesn’t have any issues with having orgasms, you probably won’t either. Again, this probably isn’t something you ever want to associate with pleasure.

The female orgasm was still pretty taboo back in 2005 when the twin study was conducted. Only 14% of the 700 women who participated in the survey claimed to always experience orgasms, while 16% either claimed they never experienced them at all or were unsure.

The research team decided that comparing the DNA of orgasm-prone and non-prone women might offer a bit more insight into the inner workings of the climax.

orgasms

Did you know that the brain can remap itself to allow orgasm through other body parts? People who have experienced lower body paralysis and are unable to feel genital stimulation can still achieve orgasm by stimulating other parts of the body, such as the nipples. There was a case involving a woman from Philadelphia who had been paralysed from the waist down and she claimed she was able to climax. The vagus nerve, which travels from the brain through the lungs, intestines, and other internal organs and circumvents the spinal cord, was found to be a new pathway to sexual pleasure by neurologist Barry Komisaruk of Rutgers University, who had studied sex in paralysed women for ten years at the time.

The specialist also found that in the years following their injuries, some women were able to reorganise their nervous system and discover new hypersensitive areas.

orgasms

Mary Roach, author of Bonk, revealed that an orgasm is a reflex of the part of the nervous system. She gave the examples of a woman who had an orgasm every time she brushed her teeth, and suggested that something in this woman’s sensory-motion control is triggering the climaxes.

According to studies, the most orgasms documented in one hour is 134!!! Yikes, that doesn’t even sound fun. You’ve probably guessed it was a woman. A man only clocked 16. Unlucky. There are some folks who suffer from something called persistent genital arousal disorder, which can involve the sufferer experiencing 180 orgasms in two hours.

Did you know that men can ejaculate without having an orgasm, and they can have orgasms without ejaculating.  Ejaculation is the process of physically firing out spunk; orgasms take place in the brain. Although they do go hand in hand a lot of the time. Also, a man can experience several orgasms without ejaculating, but it takes quite a bit of skill. Anal or prostate stimulation is worth a go though, as it apparently feels more like a whole-body climax than than an ejaculation. Come on fellas, let’s have some anal play!
