AI sexting is a pretty bizarre thing to be talking about when it comes to relationships, but here we are. You can now have a full-on flirty, sexual conversation with an AI that remembers what you like, plays along with your fantasies and is available whenever you fancy a chat. But what happens when it’s your husband doing it?
There might not be a real woman on the other end of the conversation, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t hurt. If he’s hiding sexual conversations from you, spending hours chatting to an AI girlfriend or turning to it for something he’s not getting from the relationship, it’s understandable to feel pretty bloody awful about it.
So is it cheating? Or is it really no different from watching porn or having a private fantasy? That’s where things get complicated and lines blur.
Why are people sexting AI in the first place?
The appeal is pretty obvious when you think about it. An AI is always available. You don’t have to worry about being rejected, judged or getting an awkward reply. You can say exactly what you want, explore whatever fantasy takes your fancy and the AI will simply go along with it. For some people, it’s just a bit of fun. For others, it can become a way of getting attention, affection or sexual excitement without having to deal with another actual human being. That’s probably a big part of the attraction.
There’s no real-life embarrassment and no risk of the other person telling their mates what you’ve been getting up to. It’s just you, your phone and a chatbot that’s apparently very happy to hear all about your wildest fantasies.

AI girlfriends are taking things a step further
It’s not just about sending the odd naughty message anymore. Some AI companions are designed to feel like an actual relationship. You can give them a name, choose their personality and have conversations with them over and over again. They can remember things you’ve said and respond in a way that feels personal. That’s where I can see things getting a little messy.
Having a quick sexual chat with an AI is one thing. Having an AI girlfriend that you speak to every day, tell your secrets to and turn to when you’re feeling lonely is something else entirely. There’s obviously no actual woman behind it, but the person using it can still become emotionally invested.
So, is sexting an AI cheating?
Honestly, it depends who you ask. Some people would put AI sexting in the same category as porn. It’s fantasy, it’s private and there isn’t a real person involved. Others would absolutely consider it cheating. And I can understand both sides.
If your partner has always been open about watching porn or chatting to live cam girls and you’re both fine with it, you might not bat an eyelid at them having a sexy conversation with an AI. But if they’ve secretly created an AI girlfriend, are spending hours chatting to her and deleting the conversations so you don’t find out, that feels like a completely different situation. The fact that she isn’t real doesn’t necessarily make the secrecy feel any better.
It’s the hiding that can really sting
Imagine finding out your husband has been sexting an AI behind your back. Your first reaction might be to laugh. Then you might get angry. Then the questions start. How long has he been doing this? What has he been saying? What sort of fantasies has he been talking about? And, probably the biggest one: why didn’t he just talk to me? That’s where it can really knock your confidence.
You might start wondering whether he’s bored with you or whether he finds the AI more attractive. You might even start feeling like you’re somehow competing with a completely fictional woman. And that’s a horrible feeling.
But is it really about you?
Not necessarily. People have always had private fantasies. They watch porn, read erotica, have fantasies in their heads and sometimes explore things that they’d never actually want to do in real life. AI is simply another way of doing that. So if your husband is sexting an AI, it doesn’t automatically mean he’s unhappy with you or that he doesn’t fancy you anymore. It could simply be curiosity. It could be boredom. It could be a particular fantasy he doesn’t feel comfortable talking about. Or it could be something deeper. You won’t know unless you actually talk about it.
When does it become a problem?
For me, this is where the distinction matters. If someone occasionally has a naughty conversation with an AI and gets on with their day, that’s one thing. If they’re spending every evening chatting to their virtual girlfriend instead of talking to their actual partner, that’s another.
If they’re hiding their phone, deleting conversations, becoming less interested in sex with their partner or emotionally relying on the AI, then there’s clearly something going on. At that point, arguing over whether it technically counts as cheating almost misses the point. Something is affecting the relationship.
What about the partner who finds out?
It’s very easy for the person doing the sexting to say: “But it’s only an AI.”
That might be true. But it doesn’t magically make the other person’s feelings disappear. You can understand that the AI isn’t real and still feel hurt. You can know your husband isn’t actually having an affair and still feel rejected. And you can think the whole thing is bloody weird while simultaneously feeling incredibly insecure about it. All of those feelings can exist at the same time.
Have the conversation you really don’t want to have
Nobody wants to sit down with their husband and ask about his AI sex life. It’s awkward enough asking about a real woman. Asking about a chatbot sounds like something from a Black Mirror episode. But if it’s bothering you, you need to talk about it.
Find out what he’s actually been doing rather than filling in the blanks yourself. Is it purely sexual? Does he use it every now and then? Has he become attached to one particular AI? Does he talk to it about things he doesn’t talk to you about? And then tell him how you feel. You don’t have to prove that AI sexting is objectively wrong. If it crosses a boundary for you, that’s enough to have a conversation about it.
Every couple gets to decide where their line is
There isn’t a universal rule for this. One couple might think AI sexting is no different from watching porn Another might consider it completely unacceptable. Some of these issues are touched upon on the Option One Podcast.
Some might be fine with sexual chats but not emotional ones. Others might be okay with a bit of fantasy but draw the line at having a regular AI girlfriend. The important thing is actually knowing where your partner stands. Because nobody can respect a boundary they don’t know exists.
And yes, counselling is an option
If finding out about your partner’s AI sexting has caused a massive rift, you don’t have to sort it all out yourselves. A relationship counsellor can give you somewhere to actually talk about what’s happening without the conversation turning into another row. Especially if one person keeps saying, “It’s not a big deal,” while the other is sitting there feeling completely betrayed. Sometimes the issue isn’t the AI at all. It’s the trust that has been damaged because of it.

We’re going to be having a lot more conversations like this
AI companions aren’t going anywhere. The technology is getting better, the conversations are getting more realistic and people are finding new ways to use them all the time. Which means relationships are going to have to catch up.
What happens when your partner has an AI girlfriend?
What happens when they become emotionally attached?
What happens when the AI knows more about their fantasies than you do?
Ultimately, what counts as cheating when the person on the other end isn’t actually a person? There probably isn’t going to be one answer that works for everyone. For some couples, it will be harmless fun. For others, it will feel like a genuine betrayal. But if your husband is secretly sexting an AI and you’ve found out, the important question probably isn’t whether the chatbot is real.
It’s whether the relationship still feels real to you.
If all of this has you thinking that maybe what people actually want is a bit of real human connection, you’re not alone. AI might be able to chat, flirt and tell you exactly what you want to hear, but there’s still something different about knowing there’s a real woman on the other end of the conversation.
If you want to swap the chatbot for some genuine interaction, why not explore the cam girls on Babestation? Real women, real conversations and real personalities. Because sometimes you just want to know there’s an actual person there.
