1905 St Petersburg, Russia : Troops fire on workers outside the Winter Palace trying to present a petition to the Tsar, killing up to 240 people in what becomes known as “Bloody Sunday” leading to the first Russian Revolution which implements limited reforms such as the Duma parliament and a multi-party system, but the Tsar remains in overall control.

1924 Following an election the previous year, in which the Conservatives lost their majority Stanley Baldwin resigns as Prime Minister after losing a vote of confidence in the House of Commons.
Ramsay MacDonald forms Britain’s first Labour Government, without a majority but with informal support from the Liberals.
(Labour’s first term in government lasts only 9 months, brought down by a combination of the Campbell case (when the government did not prosecute a left wing paper accused of inciting servicemen to mutiny) and plans for a controversial trade treaty with Bolshevik Russia, combined with the publication of the “Zinoviev Letter” by the Daily Mail, apparently showing pressure being put on Labour MPs by the Communist Party to vote through the treaty. The letter is generally considered now to be a forgery. In another election in October 1924, the Conservatives gain a large majority primarily at the expense of the Liberals.)
