It\u2019s not just about sending the odd naughty message anymore. Some AI companions are designed to feel like an actual relationship. You can give them a name, choose their personality and have conversations with them over and over again. They can remember things you\u2019ve said and respond in a way that feels personal. That\u2019s where I can see things getting a little messy.<\/p>\n

Having a quick sexual chat with an AI is one thing. Having an AI girlfriend that you speak to every day, tell your secrets to and turn to when you\u2019re feeling lonely is something else entirely. There\u2019s obviously no actual woman behind it, but the person using it can still become emotionally invested.<\/p>\n

So, is sexting an AI cheating?<\/b><\/p>\n

Honestly, it depends who you ask. Some people would put AI sexting in the same category as porn. It\u2019s fantasy, it\u2019s private and there isn\u2019t a real person involved. Others would absolutely consider it cheating. And I can understand both sides.<\/p>\n

If they\u2019re spending every evening chatting to their virtual girlfriend instead of talking to their actual partner, that\u2019s another.<\/p>\n

If they\u2019re hiding their phone, deleting conversations, becoming less interested in sex with their partner or emotionally relying on the AI, then there\u2019s clearly something going on. At that point, arguing over whether it technically counts as cheating almost misses the point. Something is affecting the relationship.<\/p>\n

What about the partner who finds out?<\/b><\/p>\n

It\u2019s very easy for the person doing the sexting to say: \u201cBut it\u2019s only an AI.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

That might be true. But it doesn\u2019t magically make the other person\u2019s feelings disappear. You can understand that the AI isn\u2019t real and still feel hurt. You can know your husband isn\u2019t actually having an affair and still feel rejected. And you can think the whole thing is bloody weird while simultaneously feeling incredibly insecure about it. All of those feelings can exist at the same time.<\/p>\n

Have the conversation you really don\u2019t want to have<\/b><\/p>\n

Nobody wants to sit down with their husband and ask about his AI sex life. It\u2019s awkward enough asking about a real woman. Asking about a chatbot sounds like something from a Black Mirror episode. But if it\u2019s bothering you, you need to talk about it.<\/p>\n

Find out what he\u2019s actually been doing rather than filling in the blanks yourself. Is it purely sexual? Does he use it every now and then? Has he become attached to one particular AI? Does he talk to it about things he doesn\u2019t talk to you about? And then tell him how you feel. You don\u2019t have to prove that AI sexting is objectively wrong. If it crosses a boundary for you, that\u2019s enough to have a conversation about it.<\/p>\n

Every couple gets to decide where their line is<\/b><\/p>\n

There isn\u2019t a universal rule for this. One couple might think AI sexting is no different from watching porn Another might consider it completely unacceptable. Some of these issues are touched upon on the Option One Podcast<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

A relationship counsellor can give you somewhere to actually talk about what\u2019s happening without the conversation turning into another row. Especially if one person keeps saying, \u201cIt\u2019s not a big deal,\u201d while the other is sitting there feeling completely betrayed. Sometimes the issue isn\u2019t the AI at all. It\u2019s the trust that has been damaged because of it.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to be having a lot more conversations like this<\/b><\/p>\n

AI companions aren\u2019t going anywhere. The technology is getting better, the conversations are getting more realistic and people are finding new ways to use them all the time. Which means relationships are going to have to catch up.<\/p>\n

What happens when they become emotionally attached?<\/p>\n

What happens when the AI knows more about their fantasies than you do?<\/p>\n

Ultimately, what counts as cheating when the person on the other end isn\u2019t actually a person? There probably isn\u2019t going to be one answer that works for everyone. For some couples, it will be harmless fun. For others, it will feel like a genuine betrayal. But if your husband is secretly sexting an AI and you\u2019ve found out, the important question probably isn\u2019t whether the chatbot is real.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s whether the relationship still feels real to you.<\/b><\/p>\n
